Can you do a degree apprenticeship without A levels?
Yes — A levels are not the only route into a degree apprenticeship. Most degree apprenticeship programmes specify a number of UCAS points or equivalent qualifications rather than requiring A levels specifically. This means that BTECs, T-Levels, Scottish Highers, and other Level 3 qualifications are widely accepted.
The key requirement is demonstrating that you have reached the equivalent of Level 3 (A-level standard) in your qualifications — ideally in a subject area relevant to the apprenticeship. GCSE Maths and English at grade 4 or above are almost always required regardless of your Level 3 route.
Alternative routes into degree apprenticeships
BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma
The most widely accepted A-level alternative. A BTEC at DMM or DDM (equivalent to ABB–AAB) is accepted by employers including Google, BT, Capgemini, BAE Systems, Deloitte, and NHS. The subject should be relevant — Computing, Business, Engineering, or Health.
Accepted by: Google, BT, Capgemini, BAE Systems, Deloitte, NHS
T-Level
A 2-year qualification equivalent to 3 A levels including a 45-day industry placement. T-Levels in Digital Production, Engineering & Manufacturing, and Health are increasingly accepted by tech and engineering employers. Acceptance is growing year on year.
Accepted by: Growing list of tech and engineering employers
Scottish Highers
AAABB or equivalent at Scottish Higher level is typically accepted by most degree apprenticeship employers in place of 3 A levels. Advanced Highers (equivalent to AS/A2 level) further strengthen an application for competitive programmes.
Accepted by: Most UK degree apprenticeship employers
Access to Higher Education Diploma
An Access to HE Diploma (typically studied at a further education college) can be accepted by some employers as evidence of degree-readiness. This route suits mature applicants who did not take traditional A levels. Most relevant for NHS, Civil Service, and some business employers.
Accepted by: NHS, Civil Service, some business employers
Foundation or Higher Apprenticeship progression
Completing a Level 3 (advanced) or Level 4/5 (higher) apprenticeship can be a stepping stone to a degree apprenticeship. Some employers — particularly in engineering and the public sector — explicitly offer this progression route.
Accepted by: Civil Service, BAE Systems, NHS, engineering employers
Mature applicant with work experience
Some employers consider applicants aged 21 or over on the strength of relevant work experience rather than formal academic qualifications. This is employer-specific and more common in business, public sector, and healthcare roles. Contact employers directly to ask about this route.
Accepted by: Employer-specific — check individual listings
Always check individual listings: Entry requirements vary significantly between employers and programmes. Some highly competitive roles (Google, GCHQ, Big Four) may still specify A levels or equivalent. Always read the full requirements on each job listing and contact the employer's recruitment team if you are unsure whether your qualifications are accepted.
