Yes. Most degree apprenticeships and school leaver programmes are open from age 18, which means Year 13 students can apply before they finish their A-Levels. Some programmes also accept Year 12 students for insight days and early programmes. You do not need a university place or a finished degree. The whole point of a degree apprenticeship is that you earn the degree while you work.

Far more than most students expect. The Institute of Student Employers (ISE) Annual Survey 2023 found that students who successfully secured a degree apprenticeship submitted an average of 97 applications. For competitive programmes at firms like PwC, Deloitte, and Goldman Sachs, which each receive 10,000 to 40,000 applications per year, acceptance rates are 1 to 4 percent. Earlier than you think. Most large employers open their apprenticeship applications in September or October, and the most competitive schemes close before Christmas, often within weeks of opening. If you are in Year 12 or Year 13, use the time now to research firms, build your CV, and track deadlines so you are ready when applications open.

An assessment centre is usually the final stage of a competitive application. It is a half-day or full-day event where a group of candidates complete exercises together. These typically include a group discussion, a case study or in-tray exercise, a written task, and one or more interviews. Employers use assessment centres to see how you work with others, handle pressure, and apply knowledge in a realistic setting. Yes, and it is worth the effort. Most large employers use Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) to filter CVs automatically before a human sees them. A generic CV often fails ATS screening even when you are qualified for the role.
