Babcock is recruiting a Civil Engineering Graduate Apprentice in Rosyth for September 2027. The four-year programme leads to a BEng (Hons) with Heriot-Watt University. Its live advert gives 8 December 2026 as the application closing date.
Before you start an application, check one line further down: you must be resident in Scotland. Babcock says graduate apprenticeships are for people living and working there. The role is on site in Rosyth, so you must also be able to commute reliably by the start date.
What “graduate apprenticeship” means here
The name does not mean you need a degree before applying. This is a Scottish SCQF Level 10 Graduate Apprenticeship that leads to an honours degree. Apprenticeships.scot’s civil engineering guide confirms the qualification level and explains the work and study model.
That distinction matters when you search across the UK. ApprenticeWizard’s imported row calls this a “degree apprenticeship”, while Babcock calls it a “graduate apprenticeship”. Use the employer’s wording and requirements to decide whether you qualify.
Babcock says you will study Civil Engineering with Heriot-Watt University, typically through day release, while working on infrastructure projects. The work spans planning and design through construction and maintenance. The advert names drawings, cost tracking, site inspections, quality and health and safety among the activities you may support.
What Babcock says it will pay
The advert sets out a salary for each programme year:
| Year | Advertised salary |
|---|---|
| 1 | £18,819 |
| 2 | £22,857 |
| 3 | £26,884 |
| 4 | £32,261 |
The year-four figure is £13,442 more than the year-one figure. That is the progression in this advert, not a promise about earnings after graduation. Babcock separately describes a possible future salary of up to £43,000 in a trainee civil engineer or assistant project manager role; “up to” is a ceiling, not an offer.
Work out the practical side as carefully as the pay. Rosyth is the stated work location and the role requires on-site attendance. Ask where your Heriot-Watt teaching will take place, how often you would travel and whether any study travel costs are covered. The advert describes typical day release but does not give you a personal timetable.
Check the entry routes line by line
Babcock lists several routes, including Scottish Highers at AABB or BBBBC, A-levels at ABC or BBB, an International Baccalaureate score of 29, and specified Scottish Baccalaureate and Foundation Apprenticeship combinations. It also lists a route based on SCQF credits or UCAS points.
Do not combine parts of different routes and assume they add up to eligibility. If you hold mixed qualifications, ask Babcock which route applies to you. Our guide to degree apprenticeship entry requirements explains the broader picture; this vacancy sets the rule for this job.
The advert also says the post is restricted to sole UK nationals under applicable legislation and requires BPSS and Security Check clearance. Read Babcock’s exact wording if your nationality or residency history could affect clearance.
What to do before you apply
- Check residency and travel first. Confirm that you meet the Scottish residency condition and could get to Rosyth for on-site work.
- Match your qualifications to one listed route. Ask the recruitment team if yours do not fit neatly.
- Prepare an example from something you have actually done. A design project, practical task or part-time job can show how you checked details, solved a problem or worked with others. Connect the example to the work in Babcock’s advert.
- Choose your Babcock application deliberately. The employer says to apply to one programme only and that it will assess the first application if you send more than one. If you are considering another route, compare the work before submitting; our Babcock Bristol guide shows how different its programmes can be. Save your choice and deadline in your application tracker.
Babcock says it reviews applications in the order received and may close this programme early if interest is high. Treat 8 December as the advertised latest date and check the live page before you submit.
The detail to remember
Our imported listing identified a degree apprenticeship in Rosyth. Babcock’s page supplied the part that decides whether many readers can apply at all: this is a Scottish graduate apprenticeship with a Scottish residency requirement.
A listing gets the role onto your shortlist. The employer’s advert tells you whether it belongs there.
