GKN Aerospace is taking applications for four aerospace engineering degree apprenticeship places in Bristol. The employer's current advert says applications close on Friday 23 October 2026. If this is on your shortlist, check the GKN Aerospace vacancy before spending the week polishing a different application.
The listing has an unusual detail. You start with Level 2 training in Filton, then work towards Level 4 and Level 6. That does not make this a Level 2 job: the government vacancy identifies the training course as Aerospace Engineer, Level 6. The first year is how this particular degree route begins.
What the Bristol apprenticeship involves
The programme starts in September 2027 and runs for four years, according to the government listing. GKN says your first year is at the Advanced Manufacturing Technical Excellence College in Filton. From year two, you move to its Global Technology Centre in Bristol and progress through the higher qualifications while working across engineering teams.
Those teams include airframe, design and stress, systems integration, quality, support engineering and advanced manufacturing. If you are deciding whether you want the work, look past the word aerospace. The advert describes drawings, testing, inspection and solving practical engineering problems. Pick two of those activities and ask yourself what you have actually tried, studied or built that gives you a reason to want them.
GKN advertises a £23,500 starting salary. The government listing says there are four positions and gives the location as Bristol, BS34 6FB. GKN offers support with finding first-year student accommodation if required, but the advert does not promise to pay your rent. Work out whether Filton and Bristol are viable for you before applying.
Do you need Physics A-level?
GKN says you will typically need 96 UCAS points, ideally including two STEM subjects such as Maths, Physics, Computing or Electronics. It does not state that Physics A-level is compulsory. Nor does “ideally” guarantee acceptance with any two other subjects.
The advert also asks for five GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including Maths, English and Double Science, or equivalents. It separately welcomes applicants with Education, Health and Care Plans and states an Entry Level 3 English and Maths minimum for that route. Read the wording on the employer page and ask GKN about your particular qualifications if they do not fit neatly. Our entry requirements guide explains UCAS points and the wider range of degree apprenticeship criteria; GKN's advert decides this application.
There is an honest limit here: the page does not publish a selection formula or say how much weight it gives particular subjects. You can check whether you meet the stated criteria. You cannot calculate your odds from the subject examples.
Check the deadline before you start
Both GKN's live advert and the government vacancy give 23 October 2026 as the closing date. GKN's page has an Apply now link at the time of this check on 20 October. Treat the employer page as the live authority: vacancies can close or change, and an imported listing may lag behind.
GKN describes a short online form, pre-screening questions, an online assessment for candidates meeting its criteria, then an assessment centre at the Bristol Global Technology Centre. Prepare one clear example of a practical problem you worked through and one of working with others. A school project, part-time job or something you made can be useful if you can explain your own contribution. Yusuf's guide to the STAR method can help you make that example specific.
If you are comparing Bristol engineering routes, Babcock's 2027 Bristol programmes cover different work and entry rules. Compare the day-to-day tasks and travel before deciding where to spend your next application hour. You can search and save live opportunities, then return to each employer's advert for the final deadline check.
The detail worth keeping
“Degree apprenticeship” tells you where this route is going. GKN's first-year Level 2 training tells you how it gets there. Neither phrase alone describes the four years. Read the sequence, check the subject wording, and, if it suits you, apply while the employer's page is still open.
ApprenticeWizard had 6,078 active opportunities, including 273 tagged as degree apprenticeships, in its database on 20 October 2026. Those are search counts, not 273 individually verified openings. Start your shortlist here, then check each employer's live advert before applying.
