S&W has two Bristol school leaver vacancies for September 2027: accountancy and audit. Both are open on the employer's application system as checked on 24 October 2026. Its listings say you can submit only one application to any of its programmes in a recruitment season. That makes the choice worth taking seriously before you click “I'm interested”.
What would you actually do?
In accountancy, you would join S&W's Business Outsourcing Services team. The Bristol vacancy names year-end and management accounts, bookkeeping, VAT returns and cloud accounting software. You would help clients and their finance teams keep records and produce useful figures. S&W says you would study for AAT and ACCA qualifications.
In audit, you would test financial information and processes, work with client teams and help resolve audit and accounting questions. The Bristol audit vacancy names the ACA professional qualification. You would be checking the evidence behind an organisation's accounts rather than helping run its day-to-day finance work.
That is the practical split. If you like improving how figures are produced and used, read the accountancy duties closely. If you like checking whether figures and controls stand up to scrutiny, start with audit. Neither route requires previous accountancy work experience according to S&W. You still need to show why the actual work appeals to you.
Do these programmes give you a degree?
S&W describes its school leaver routes as professional apprenticeships. Its Bristol accountancy advert names Level 4 AAT and Level 7 ACCA study; the audit advert names Level 7 ACA. Neither vacancy promises a bachelor's or master's degree. Level 7 describes the level of a qualification; it does not, by itself, mean you graduate with a master's degree. GOV.UK lists both master's degrees and Level 7 diplomas as Level 7 qualifications.
This distinction matters because the four S&W rows currently marked “degree-apprenticeship” in ApprenticeWizard's database are scraper categories. The employer's qualification wording is the source to use when deciding what you will earn. Those four rows were active when checked on 24 October 2026; their category is not proof of a degree award. If a degree is essential to your plans, ask S&W to confirm the exact award for the vacancy before applying, and search other live routes by level.
Check the entry requirements before choosing
Both Bristol adverts ask for at least 112 UCAS points from your top three A levels or equivalent, excluding General Studies, plus grade 5 in GCSE English Language and Maths. Predicted A-level grades count at application stage. If you are comparing requirements across employers, our guide to GCSE and A-level entry rules explains why each vacancy needs its own check. S&W says training is funded and salary is “competitive”, but neither Bristol advert gives a salary figure. It also does not publish a closing date on those two vacancy pages. A date shown on a third-party listing should not become your deadline without confirmation from S&W.
The accountancy advert says a CV upload is mandatory in the application form but will not be formally reviewed. Follow the form's instructions anyway. S&W says candidates can request reasonable adjustments through its recruiter. If that would help you show your ability, ask before an assessment rather than trying to manage without it.
Make the one application count
- Read both original Bristol vacancies from top to bottom. Write down three tasks from each that you could explain in your own words.
- Choose the route whose daily work you want, then check the qualification again. If the award is unclear, ask S&W before submitting.
- Prepare one example that shows care with figures or evidence. A school project, part-time job or club budget can work if you explain what you did and checked.
- Submit through the employer page while it still accepts applications. The live page is the final check for availability and any updated deadline.
If you are still torn, our guide to choosing between two apprenticeship offers gives you a way to compare the work, training and location. Use that method before an application too. S&W's one-application rule means you cannot treat accountancy and audit as two entries on a speculative list.
The part that matters
“Accountancy” and “audit” sound close until you picture the working week. One helps produce and use the numbers; the other tests the evidence behind them. Choose the work you can make a specific case for. Check the qualification separately from the apprenticeship level.
