AWE's Project Controls Apprenticeship vacancy on Find an apprenticeship is accepting applications and lists Sunday 1 November 2026 as its closing date. It is a four-year Level 6 programme starting in September 2027, with five places and a £24,500 first-year salary.
AWE's project controls programme page now says applications are open and gives the same 1 April 2027 age threshold as the government vacancy. Read the role-specific vacancy before applying because its closing date and work address are specific to this opening.
What project controls means here
Project controls is the work that helps a team see whether a project is on time, within its agreed cost and facing new risks. AWE says apprentices may help build schedules, compare actual progress with the plan, forecast costs and explain what changed. It also mentions interpreting engineering drawings and using data to support decisions. That is a different job from managing an entire project or designing an engineering component.
The government vacancy lists Aldermaston, Berkshire, as the work address. An imported ApprenticeWizard listing also mentions Burghfield. Do not assume you can choose either site: ask AWE where this placement will be based before planning a commute. The government page says the training provider is still to be confirmed and that training may use day or block release.
The advert says £24,500 in year one and £26,000 in year two, with later rises conditional on satisfactory progress and milestones. It describes a nine-day fortnight, which gives staff every other Friday off. These details belong to this vacancy, not to every AWE apprenticeship.
Check the entry rules before writing your answers
The live vacancy asks for five GCSEs at grade 4/C or above, including Maths and English. Its structured A-level field says “Any (or T level or BTEC) (grade C or above)”. AWE's programme page is more specific: three A-levels at grade C or above, a T Level pass with C or above on the core, or a BTEC Extended Diploma at MMM. Do not read the shorter government field as a promise that one A-level is enough. If you have fewer than three A-levels, mixed qualifications or a borderline grade, contact earlycareers@awe.co.uk and quote vacancy VAC2000059075 before ruling yourself in or out.
Both sources say the role has security restrictions. The current government vacancy specifies British nationality and age 18 or over by 1 April 2027, as well as the ability to obtain and keep the required security clearance. Read its full notice if your citizenship or residency history could matter. Our guide to degree apprenticeship entry requirements gives the wider picture; the employer must answer a question about this particular role.
What to do before 1 November
- Open the current vacancy and check that Apply is still available. A deadline on a search card is not proof that applications remain open later in the week.
- Resolve an entry-rule question with AWE. Send your actual qualification combination and the vacancy reference. Keep the reply with your application notes.
- Use a concrete example of planning or analysis. A school project, club event or part-time job can show how you tracked work, spotted a problem and explained a change. AWE describes the role in terms of schedules, costs, risks and reporting, so connect your example to the work rather than writing a generic claim about being organised.
- Check the commute and training pattern. The government listing names Aldermaston, while another listing names Burghfield and the training provider is not yet settled. Ask where you would work and study.
AWE asks candidates to choose one apprenticeship application. If you are considering its building services route too, read our comparison of that role with Babcock's Plymouth opening before choosing. You can search other live degree apprenticeships while you wait for a reply.
The part that matters
The two live pages agree that this Level 6 vacancy is open. They do not give equally detailed qualification rules. A five-minute email about your grades or the work site could save you from making a decision on incomplete information.
ApprenticeWizard tracks live apprenticeships and internships with filters and a free application tracker. Our database had 276 active listings tagged as degree apprenticeships at 18:01 GMT on 26 October 2026; that is a site-wide category count, not 276 employer-verified Level 6 places.
