Two Babcock vacancies have almost the same title. The Leicester and Hull mechanical engineering degree apprenticeships both list 8 December 2026 as their closing date, but they lead to different degrees and different study journeys.
Babcock says it will assess only the first programme application you submit if you apply to more than one. Compare the Leicester vacancy and Hull vacancy before making that choice. Both were live when checked on 27 October 2026.
The Leicester role is a four-year Level 6 programme with Cavendish Nuclear. Babcock lists a BEng (Hons) in Nuclear Engineering through the University of Derby. Academic learning takes place at the Nuclear Skills Academy's iHub in Derby. The listing describes three semesters a year for the first three years and two in the final year, but does not give a personal travel timetable. Ask recruitment how often you would need to be in Derby and how travel or accommodation would work.
The Hull role is a five-year Level 6 programme with Cavendish Nuclear. Its degree is a BEng (Hons) in Electro-mechanical Engineering with the University of Nottingham. Babcock says you would attend four separate one-week university blocks each year, plus extra campus time for exams. For the rest of the year, the listing describes recorded lectures and assignments alongside work.
That is a practical difference if you live in either city. A university name tells you where to ask about study; it does not settle who pays for travel or where you stay. Put those questions to Babcock before treating either route as affordable for you.
Both adverts list £23,598 in year one, £26,903 in year two, £30,208 in year three and £33,513 in year four. The Hull advert also lists £37,025 for its fifth year. These are annual advertised figures, not take-home pay or a promise about living costs.
Leicester's listed four-year figures total £114,222. Hull's five listed years total £151,247. Those totals have different lengths, so they do not tell you which programme is the better financial choice. The extra Hull year also means another year of study and work before completion.
The earlier Babcock Bristol guide covers a different set of roles. Do not borrow its salary or university details for either of these vacancies.
Both mechanical adverts ask for five GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including Maths, English and Science. Their A-level route asks for 104 UCAS points including Maths and Physics or another STEM subject at grade C. They also describe BTEC, Access, IB and T-level routes. Read the exact wording for your qualification before you apply.
Both listings say the roles require BPSS and Security Check clearance. They also include a sole UK nationality requirement under national security legislation. If your circumstances are unclear, ask the employer directly rather than guessing from a general careers page.
Babcock warns that either vacancy could close before 8 December if interest is high. The displayed date is the employer's deadline, not a guarantee that an application form will remain available until then.
Write down three answers before applying:
The Leicester advert describes CAD, technical drawings and mechanical calculations on nuclear projects. Hull describes similar engineering work, but its electro-mechanical degree and block study pattern change the experience. Pick a reason that fits the vacancy you chose. If you know an apprentice, ask one focused question about their working week and use the answer to test your choice.
Save the exact role ID in your shortlist: Leicester is 74993 and Hull is 74994. If you are comparing a more general engineering route, our Babcock and AWE building services comparison explains a different kind of work.
On 27 October, ApprenticeWizard had 273 active records categorised as degree apprenticeships. Those records can include location variants and are not a count of independently verified openings. The two Babcock roles above were checked against the employer's own listings.
These are two real Level 6 openings, not interchangeable locations on one course. The decision turns on the subject you want to study and the week you would have to live, as much as the employer name on the advert.
ApprenticeWizard brings apprenticeship and internship listings together with a free application tracker. Vacancy facts were checked against Babcock's careers pages on 27 October 2026; database records were checked on the same date. Browse opportunities and start your list.
