Dalcour Maclaren's rural surveying apprenticeship asks for a full UK driving licence and access to your own car. If you're choosing a degree apprenticeship while still at sixth form, that belongs near the top of your checks.
The employer says its Land & Property apprenticeship is open. Its East Midlands vacancy on GOV.UK advertises a Level 6 chartered surveyor apprenticeship, starting on 6 September 2027 and closing on 22 January 2027. We checked both sources on 27 October 2026.
This guide focuses on the Derby vacancy and the practical questions to settle before applying. Other offices can have different arrangements.
The advert gives the workplace as The Crew Yard, Langley Priory, Moor Lane, Tonge, Melbourne, Derby, DE73 8BB. Use that address when checking travel. A search result labelled Derby doesn't tell you whether you can reach the office from home.
The advertised salary is £19,500 a year for 37.5 hours a week. That's £1,625 a month before deductions, calculated as £19,500 divided by 12. It is a starting point for a budget, rather than a take-home pay figure.
Work through the cost of reaching the office and keeping a car available. Ask the recruitment team how business mileage, insurance and travel time are handled. The sources we checked don't settle those details, and a salary alone won't tell you what the arrangement costs you.
The employer's Land & Property programme page requires your own transport. The Derby advert is more specific: a car is needed for surveys at remote rural sites.
If you're learning to drive, ask recruitment whether the requirement must be met when applying or by the start date. Neither page gives that timing. Don't assume a planned driving test is enough, and don't rule yourself out without asking.
The employer also lists five GCSEs including English and Maths, three A-levels or equivalent at C or above, and UK work eligibility. Check equivalent qualifications directly with recruitment if your course doesn't fit that wording.
The degree is a BSc (Hons) in Rural Enterprise & Land Management at Harper Adams University. The programme lasts five years and provides a route towards RICS accreditation.
The work connects landowners with infrastructure projects. You could help with compensation discussions or arrangements for access to land. Think about whether you'd enjoy handling details with people whose property is affected by a project, alongside studying the subject.
Before writing an application, make a small research note: find a local infrastructure project, identify a land or access question it raises, and write down what you'd want to understand about it. Treat that as your own preparation exercise. It isn't an employer assessment task, and you don't need to pretend you already know the answer.
For another view of infrastructure work, our AWE project controls guide looks at planning and monitoring delivery. Read the duties before deciding which kind of work interests you.
Dalcour Maclaren's apprenticeship FAQs say previous industry experience isn't expected. They also confirm a funded degree and support for relevant expenses when you're away for training.
Ask for the study calendar and expense arrangements for this vacancy. University travel and everyday commuting are different budget questions. Keep the answers beside the advert so you can compare them with another offer later.
The general FAQ names a smaller set of offices than the vacancy listings. For the Derby application, use the address on the specific advert and confirm it with recruitment.
On 27 October, ApprenticeWizard held 257 active records categorised as degree apprenticeships, including nine Dalcour Maclaren records. These are database records, including location variants, rather than a count of unique programmes or independently verified openings.
Save the exact vacancy reference and your unanswered questions. A place on your shortlist should mean you understand enough to take the next step. It doesn't mean every practical detail has already been resolved.
