How to Pass a Numerical Reasoning Test for Apprenticeship Applications
Numerical reasoning tests are not maths exams. That distinction matters.
You are not being asked to solve equations or recall formulas. You are being asked to interpret data quickly and accurately under time pressure. Most questions involve a table or graph followed by a multiple-choice question. The maths is usually not harder than GCSE level. The difficulty is speed, accuracy, and staying calm.
Understand the format before you sit it
Most major employers use tests from SHL, Korn Ferry, Cubiks or Arctic Shores. Each has a slightly different feel. SHL tends to use tables and press you for speed. Korn Ferry uses a mixture of graph and table formats.
Before your test, find out which provider the employer uses — it is often listed in the test invite or on graduate forum sites. Then practise on that format specifically. Generic maths practice helps, but it will not prepare you for the time pressure or the specific question styles.
The skills that actually matter
Percentage change. Almost every numerical reasoning test has at least one percentage change question. New value minus old value, divided by old value, times one hundred. Drill this until you can do it in fifteen seconds.
Reading tables correctly. A large proportion of errors come from misreading which row or column a figure is in. Slow down at the reading stage to avoid recalculating with the wrong number.
Estimation. If a question has five answer options and one is clearly wrong by a factor of ten, eliminate it immediately. Estimating before you calculate saves time and reduces errors.
Mental arithmetic. You will usually be allowed a calculator, but reaching for it constantly costs time. Practise doing rough mental calculations before using the calculator to verify.
A practice strategy that works
One hour of focused practice with review is better than three hours of doing tests on autopilot. After each practice test, go through every question you got wrong or guessed on and understand exactly why the right answer is correct. If you cannot explain it, you have not learned from it.
Aim for at least four full practice tests before your real assessment. Do the final one under proper exam conditions: strictly timed, no interruptions, no phone.

On test day
Note the time per question before you start — usually 45–75 seconds. Do not spend more than double the per-question allocation on any single question. Guess and flag it, then return if time allows.
If the test is online and unsupervised, make sure your environment is set up: strong internet connection, a calculator, pen and paper for rough working, and a quiet room. An interrupted test is a wasted application.
The mindset that helps
Numerical reasoning tests measure a specific, improvable skill. Strong candidates fail them regularly because they underestimate how much preparation is needed. Candidates who prepare for four weeks consistently outperform those who rely on natural ability.
Treat it like revision for an exam you need to pass, because that is exactly what it is.
