MUFG's UK Degree Apprenticeship Closes in 11 Days, and It Does Not Ask for A-Levels
Most banking degree apprenticeships filter hard on UCAS points before anything else. MUFG's does not. Its Level 6 Financial Services Professional apprenticeship, open now in London, asks only for five GCSEs at grade 5-9 or above — no named A-level or UCAS threshold at all. Applications close 14 September 2026.
What is open today
Two streams are live in our database, both London-based, both closing 14 September:
- Strategy and Business Reporting — GCSE English and Maths at grade 7 or above.
- ESFO Portfolio Management — GCSE English and Maths at grade 6 or above, leading to the Associate Chartered Banker Diploma.
Neither the GOV.UK listing nor MUFG's own careers site discloses a salary figure — both say "competitive salary." We could not verify a number from any primary source, so we are not printing one.
The actual structure
MUFG frames this as a two-year Apprenticeship Programme; the individual GOV.UK vacancy listings describe an 18-month training period delivered virtually by BPP University, working toward the Level 6 Financial Services Professional standard. Those two figures do not fully reconcile — read the 18 months as the training component and the 2 years as the total employment window, and confirm directly with MUFG which applies to your offer if it matters to your planning.
Assessment centres run in mid-October 2026, and successful candidates start 18 January 2027. The application process itself runs five stages: choosing a programme, an online application and CV, online verbal and numerical assessments, a roughly 30-minute phone interview, then an in-person assessment day with a group exercise, a business interview and a networking session.
MUFG places apprentices across Global Corporate and Investment Banking, Global Markets, or Corporate Functions, and states explicitly that it considers candidates from any degree discipline — there is no requirement to have studied finance, maths or economics.
What we could not confirm
No applicants-per-place figure exists in any public source for this scheme, and neither MUFG nor any reputable outlet has published one for comparable banking apprenticeships at this level. We searched specifically and found nothing to report — if you see a ratio quoted elsewhere, it is not verified.
What to actually do
- Do not self-select out on academics. If your GCSEs clear the bar and your predicted A-levels are middling, apply anyway — MUFG has told you directly it does not filter on subject or UCAS points.
- Choose your stream on substance. Strategy and Business Reporting sits closer to internal finance and analytics; ESFO Portfolio Management sits closer to client-facing operations and leads to a named professional diploma. Read both role descriptions before picking.
- Prepare for numerical reasoning now, not the week before. The online verbal and numerical stage is standard practice at London banks and the most improvable part of the whole process.
- Apply before 14 September. Level 6 and 7 vacancies are currently a thin market nationally — a scheme this specific about its bar is worth prioritising over one you are guessing at.
The part that matters
A bank apprenticeship that tells you upfront it does not care about your A-levels is unusual enough to be worth naming directly. Most schemes at this level use UCAS points as a first-pass filter because it is cheap to administer, not because it predicts who will be good at the job. MUFG has chosen not to. Whether that makes the scheme easier to get into is a separate question from whether it is a better filter — but it does mean your GCSEs, not your sixth-form transcript, are what stands between you and an application here.
