Babcock's open Level 6 nuclear role pays from £27,381. Check grades, nationality and travel before applying.
Babcock is accepting applications for a Nuclear Scientist and Engineer Degree Apprentice at Devonport, Plymouth. The employer's live advert says the four-year Level 6 programme starts in September 2027, pays from £27,381, and closes on 8 December 2026. It also says it may close earlier if enough people apply.
Before you spend an evening on the form, check four things: your grades, your nationality and clearance eligibility, the Devonport commute, and the study trips to Somerset. They decide whether this particular route fits you more than the word “nuclear” does.
Babcock asks for GCSE Maths and English at grade 4/C or above. You also need three A-levels at grade C or above, including Maths and one other STEM subject. The advert does not list a BTEC alternative, so ask the recruitment team before assuming one would count.
The role has a specific nationality condition: Babcock says it may only be occupied by a sole UK national under applicable national security legislation. It also says the successful applicant must be able to achieve and maintain BPSS, Security Check and Naval Nuclear Propulsion Programme Information clearance. The advert notes that place of birth, nationality, citizenship and residence history can affect eligibility. If you are unsure, read the full employer wording and ask Babcock before applying. A blog cannot assess your clearance.
Our general GCSE and A-level guide explains how requirements vary across employers. For this application, Babcock's own advert is the rule.
The job is based at Devonport. Babcock says you must be on site at least three days a week and live within a reasonable commuting distance. The degree is delivered by University Centre Somerset at its Cannington campus through block-release study. That is a different weekly rhythm from a local one-day university course.
The advert does not spell out how travel or accommodation for the Somerset blocks is arranged. If Plymouth is workable but Cannington is difficult, ask Babcock about the expected block schedule and travel support before you commit. Do the journey arithmetic with your own starting point, rather than assuming the £27,381 salary settles it.
Across four years, Babcock says you would move through teams including design delivery, safety engineering, operations and maintenance, reactor commissioning and radioactive waste management. It describes work on engineering calculations, modelling, drawings and technical reports that support the safe refit and maintenance of the UK's nuclear submarine fleet. The programme leads towards a Bachelor's (Honours) degree; the advert does not name a specific degree title.
Babcock asks applicants to apply to one programme only. If it receives more than one application from you, it says it will assess the first submitted. This matters because Babcock also has other Devonport engineering routes. Read their work and entry rules before selecting the nuclear role. Our comparison of Babcock's Leicester and Hull mechanical roles shows how the same employer can offer materially different work and travel patterns.
The live vacancy has an “Apply now” link that leads to Babcock's careers sign-in. You may need an account to continue. Babcock says applications are reviewed in order and may close early, so do not treat 8 December as a guarantee that the form will remain open until then.
The interesting part is the work: a degree alongside safety-critical engineering. The practical decision is whether the entry conditions and two locations fit your life. Make that decision before the application, not after an offer.
